The Spruce Grove and District Agricultural Society (Ag. Society) is pleased to announce funding to support preserving the Archives of Spruce Grove and the surrounding area.

This project has been made possible in part by Library and Archives Canada’s Documentary Heritage Communities Program who granted the Ag. Society $50,000.00. In accepting our proposal, we can employ an Archivist for one year to prepare the Archives collection for digitization. This methodical record keeping enables the Archives to move forward with plans to make the collection more accessible to our entire community, and others interested in our heritage.

“My sincere congratulations and thanks go out to all the recipients for their important work. Documentary heritage projects like these build on the rich collective Canadian memory. We need these projects to tell stories about this beautiful country, so that we can better understand each other and see the road ahead. These projects safeguard and document our communities’ oral, recorded and published history and the recipients are playing a pivotal role. Library and Archives Canada’s program to support stories is welcome at a time where diligent, fact-based work is needed help combat disinformation and misinformation.”

—The Honourable Pascale St-Onge, Minister of Canadian Heritage

“Congratulations to this year’s recipients. I applaud the important work you do in ensuring the history of your communities is preserved for generations to come. I also recognize the valuable role LAC plays in supporting these documentary heritage organizations year after year. LAC will continue to foster this culture of collaboration with communities across Canada so that our collective stories remain accessible to all.”

—Leslie Weir, Librarian and Archivist of Canada

Backgrounder:

This grant of $50,000.00 along with a $21,099.00 Community Initiatives Program – cost sharing grant from the Government of Alberta, provides for a one year term for an Archivist  to organize and prepare documents, and digitize documents, and develop policies and procedures to guide this work into the future. The Archivist will implement the most up to date methods of archive management and preservation so that the paper documents, photographs, books, newspaper clippings, CDs and audio tapes that hold the essence of Spruce Grove and the surrounding area community history are protected in the best way possible.

The Ag. Society would like to thank the Archive Volunteers who have, since 2000, collected, documented, and stored the collection so carefully in the little building on the elevator site. A dedicated committee of six volunteers, who are passionate about preserving the history of Spruce Grove, have been working toward this funding goal since last summer.

Please Note:The Archives will be CLOSED to the public for the next year while records are assessed and reorganized. We are also planning for the move of the Archives to a safer, more secure, public location in the near future. Research inquiries can be directed to [email protected] will be managed in the interim.
